Modern Consumer Unit for a Crowborough New Build — East Grinstead
We were asked by Brookworth Homes to supply and fit a modern consumer unit for one of their new build properties in Crowborough. A job done right.

What the customer needed
We do a fair bit of work with property developers, and this job was for Brookworth Homes at one of their new sites in Crowborough. When you're putting up a new house, you have to get the electrics spot on from the very beginning. There are no second chances. A modern family home has a lot of electrical demands. You've got rings for sockets, multiple lighting circuits, a dedicated cooker circuit, maybe a shower, and feeds for future things like a car charger. All of these need their own protection, and a standard, small consumer unit just isn't going to have enough room to do the job properly and safely.
The solution
The best solution here was a brand new, high-specification Fusebox consumer unit. We chose a 'double stack' board, which simply means it has two rows instead of one. This gave us plenty of space to wire in all the required circuits neatly, with room to spare for any future additions. We fitted the board out entirely with RCBOs. This is the modern way to do it. An RCBO gives each individual circuit its own protection from both overcurrent and earth faults. If your kettle develops a fault and trips the power, it will only trip the kitchen socket circuit – the lights and everything else will stay on. It's much safer and a lot less hassle. As required by the latest BS 7671 wiring regulations, we also installed a Surge Protection Device (SPD). This bit of kit sits in the board and acts as a gatekeeper, protecting all the sensitive electronics in the house from voltage spikes on the mains supply. It's a must-have for protecting TVs, computers, and smart appliances.
How it turned out
The result for Brookworth Homes was a professionally installed, fully certified, and regulation-compliant electrical heart for their new property. The board is tidy, clearly labelled, and provides the best possible protection for the future homeowners. We were in and out in half a day, getting the job done efficiently without holding up any of the other trades on site. It's a prime example of a modern, safe consumer unit installation, built to last and to keep the property's electrics running smoothly for years to come.

Common questions
An RCBO combines a circuit breaker and an RCD. Using one for each circuit means that if a fault occurs, only that single circuit will trip, not half your house. It makes finding faults easier and is much less disruptive.
Yes, it is now a requirement for new installations under the wiring regulations. An SPD protects your sensitive electronics like TVs, PCs, and smart appliances from damage caused by power surges, potentially saving you thousands.
A a 'double stack', or two-row, consumer unit provides more space. Modern homes have many more individual circuits than older ones, and a larger board allows us to wire them all safely and neatly, with room for future additions.
A standard consumer unit replacement usually takes between half a day and a day. We work as efficiently as possible to minimise the disruption and will always give you a clear idea of the timeframe before we begin work.
